"Love Happens (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)" – Album Guide to Tracks and Key Scenes
Overview
Can a grief drama that was sold as a romantic comedy really live or die on its soundtrack? With Love Happens (2009), the music often does more emotional work than the dialogue. The film itself is a polished studio piece about loss and second chances; its soundtrack is a carefully curated indie-and-score hybrid that tries to ground that gloss in something more fragile and human.
On paper, the line-up is almost a mid-2000s mixtape: Badly Drawn Boy, Priscilla Ahn, Rogue Wave, Eels, The Postal Service, Explosions in the Sky, John Hiatt, plus Christopher Young’s original score cues. The official song album runs a little under 50 minutes in its most complete digital form, while some regions get a shorter seven-track version – same core mood, less depth. The overall effect is hushed but not sleepy: guitars are clean, drums understated, vocals close to the mic, score cues more about texture than big themes.
Underneath that restraint there’s a pretty clear design. Intimate singer-songwriter tracks sketch out Burke and Eloise’s vulnerability. Indie rock and indietronica (Rogue Wave, The Postal Service) give their night out in Seattle some looseness and movement. Post-rock from Explosions in the Sky gives Walter’s storyline something wordless and huge. John Hiatt’s classic ballad drops in as a blunt instrument of sincerity, while Christopher Young’s orchestra quietly stitches everything together in between.
Stylistically it’s a blend of indie pop, folk, post-rock, and grown-up soft rock, with Young’s score borrowing lightly from contemporary acoustic-guitar-and-strings
