Soundtrack: Deadpool and Wolverine
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) Song Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
[Chorus]
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
[Verse 2]
So take the photographs and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while
[Chorus]
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
[Violin Solo]
[Chorus]
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life

About “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”
The song "Good Riddance" by Billie Joe Armstrong is a contemplative and serious piece of music that begins with Armstrong messing up the opening chords twice in a row, followed by him muttering "fuck" under his voice. This mishap was intentionally recorded to provide comic relief for the song, as it symbolizes the end of a relationship and the importance of learning from hardships. The song's title, "Good Riddance," is a nod to John Lennon's famous quote, "In the end it will be right, if not, it’s not the end yet."
The line "I hope you had the time of your life" is sarcastic and essentially an “f you," referencing the famous Dirty Dancing song "Time of my Life." The photos represent memories of a relationship that linger even after the relationship is over, signaling that the relationship is over. In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, Billie Joe Armstrong said that this line refers to covering up a tattoo of a former lover's name.
Despite the irony in the song and its title, the use of "For what it's worth" is likely meant to be sincere. The breakup was not his choice, but he does not regret the relationship. The song was originally written four years before the rest of the Nimrod album, but it was considered too different from the rest and ultimately not included.
Producer Rob Cavallo suggested adding strings to the song when Armstrong decided to record the song for Nimrod. He sent the band into the other room to play foosball while he recorded the strings, which took about fifteen, twenty minutes or half an hour at the most. Cavallo reflected on his decision to add the strings, stating that it was a hit the second he heard it.
"Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" by Green Day is a reflective ballad that delves into themes of change, memory, and acceptance. Written by Billie Joe Armstrong after a breakup, the song conveys a mixture of bitterness and a desire to move forward.
