My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 — official trailer, 2016

Overview

How do you score a sequel about parents, a teen, and a surprise vow renewal — without losing the original’s heart? My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 answers with bright Greek pop, crowd-pleasing 80s/90s staples, and a gentle, hummable score. As Toula and Ian juggle their daughter’s college angst and the family’s “oops, our marriage wasn’t legal” revelation, the soundtrack toggles between bouzouki warmth and mainstream comfort food.

The compilation blends diegetic dance tunes with short score cues. Traditional flavors (“Zorbas,” folk-styled source) sit next to radio-friendly cuts (“Walk Like an Egyptian”), while the original end-title ballad “Even More Mine” closes the circle on intergenerational romance. According to Back Lot Music’s album listing, the official release packs 21 tracks in a brisk 32 minutes, mixing Lennertz’s cues with featured songs.

Functionally, the music marks phases: arrival — neighborhood bustle and school scenes scored with quick, comic cues; adaptation — Greek standards at parties; rebellion — teen pop and sly 80s nods; collapse — quiet piano and strings; reconciliation — end-title balladry. The palette is hospitable by design: come for the jokes, stay for the dance line.

How It Was Made

Composer Christopher Lennertz provides the score, built around nimble bouzouki and light-touch orchestration that can pivot from sitcom timing to family poignancy. Music supervision is credited within the music department (production lists include a dedicated supervisor and assistants), with the album released by Back Lot Music to coincide with the U.S. theatrical opening (late March 2016). According to Filmmusicreporter’s release brief, the soundtrack combines Lennertz’s originals with songs by The Bangles, Mandisa, Helena Paparizou, and more.

Editorially, cues are short and purposeful — scene “buttons,” stingers for reaction shots, and a few fuller set-pieces where diegetic performance takes over (wedding-adjacent celebration, multigenerational party). The franchise’s producer-actor Rita Wilson also contributes as a songwriter and vocalist on the end-title song.

Tracks & Scenes

“Even More Mine” — Rita Wilson
Where it plays: end titles, immediately after the wedding-re-wedding festivities conclude. The ballad floats over hugs, photo flashes, and the first beats of the credits — a curtain call for the clan.
Why it matters: the franchise’s producer steps to the mic with a devoted love song; it’s the film’s soft landing and a wink to real-life marriage longevity.

“Walk Like an Egyptian” — The Bangles
Where it plays: used as a breezy party/drive-time needle-drop to keep montage energy up around family chaos (prep and errands). The mix pops for a few bars, then ducks under dialogue and reaction shots.
Why it matters: pure crowd energy — a familiar 80s hook that flips the mood from stress to shrug-and-dance.

“Pou Pige Tosi Agapi” — Helena Paparizou
Where it plays: source on the Greek-themed celebration floor: cousins and aunties clap time, the camera rides the line dance, and the song’s melodic lift bridges generations.
Why it matters: contemporary Greek pop in a Hollywood family comedy — authenticity and flair in one placement.

“Zorbas” — (arr. Christopher Lennertz)
Where it plays: diegetic dance at the party/wedding events. Guests form a loose circle; tempo ramps; elders take the middle to cheers and ululations.
Why it matters: shorthand for joy and communal identity; it also cues a few visual punchlines as the circle expands.

“White Wedding” — (Billy Idol)
Where it plays: a brief, cheeky needle-drop during wedding-planning gags — a lyrical joke on the Portokalos rite-redo.
Why it matters: title as punchline; one bar is enough.

“Strangers in Love” — Parisian
Where it plays: teen-tilted hallway/after-school beat when Paris weighs independence against obligation; the song threads between over-the-shoulder shots and parental check-ins.
Why it matters: frames the daughter’s perspective without breaking the film’s light tone.

“All of Me” — John Legend
Where it plays: non-diegetic needle-drop for a tender montage of reconciliations and quiet looks before the big day.
Why it matters: a modern standard that lends grace to an otherwise busy farce.

Score highlights — Christopher Lennertz
Where it plays: “Northwestern U,” “Son for Paris,” “Will You Marry Me?” and other sub-2-minute cues pepper school visits, father-daughter beats, and proposal logistics.
Why it matters: quick thematic tags keep momentum without stealing scenes; bouzouki lines feel home-cooked.

Notes & Trivia

  • Composer credit: Christopher Lennertz. The sequel’s score leans bouzouki and light percussion over strings.

  • Label: Back Lot Music. U.S. album streeted the week of release with 21 tracks.
  • Helena Paparizou’s “Pou Pige Tosi Agapi” predates the film; the soundtrack recontextualizes it for the party setting.
  • The compilation is short by design — lots of 60–110-second cues, quick to the joke.

Music–Story Links

When elders re-claim the floor to “Zorbas,” the movie re-centers on family continuity — Paris sees belonging and burden in the same circle. “Strangers in Love” pivots us into her headspace: new crush, new boundaries, same noisy aunties. A wink of “White Wedding” underlines the redo-vows gag; the cue is basically a rimshot. And the end-title “Even More Mine” reframes the chaos as commitment — vows aren’t a reset so much as a renewal.

Reception & Quotes

The film drew mixed reviews; the album fared better as easy-listening comfort with a Greek accent. The single “Even More Mine” found a second life offscreen at real weddings and in press profiles of Wilson’s songwriting.

“Back Lot’s package blends Lennertz’s bright cues with familiar songs for a friendly, breezy listen.” — trade coverage summary
“End-title original ‘Even More Mine’ is elegant, unfussy pop, tailored to the franchise’s heart.” — year-end soundtrack roundups

Vows, again: score softens, then the dance floor takes over.

So, we have here the second part. The main character is the same similar to very fat Amy Winehouse. Already from the trailer of the film, beautiful jokes jump on us ("Shave everything" – saying mom to a daughter when the latter is expecting a nice evening with her boyfriend) and philosophical expressions ("Why parent say: "dream big", when they actually mean: "…not too big"?"). However, humor is more than enough here. It is all with a distinctive Greek accent, and not only in pronunciation. They are like gypsies or Italians, where a lot of family members everywhere and the larger family is – the easier it lives on Earth. These are signs of the survival of the herd, which were shown a little in the cult serial movie Friends, and very strongly showed in this film. The main part of jokes are born from the fact that the main characters (amongst them almost all women of the one family) practically don’t have personal space – relatives always interfere, even in the most intimate moments when you want to, at last, be alone, and throw out all the annoying ones out of your room. Or a car. Fantastically beautiful melody Pou Pige Tosi Agapi performed by Greek Helena Paparizou in the pop genre, with lyrics shaped by beauteous voice. It is diluted with rock Walk Like An Egyptian by seriously forgotten The Bangles (the peak of the popularity of which arrived in the 1980s, despite the fact that in 1999 they again united together and work to this days, not giving out loud hits). All Of Me, probably, is the most beautiful piece of music among the entire collection, with phenomenally deep lyrics, which rarely found among the music of pop genre. This music a little lack of depth and rock component, which asks to be here for a few times during these 5 minutes. Most part of songs of the collection – instrumental.
