Selassie Is The Chapel Lyrics – Stephen Marley

Song Insights: "Selassie is the Chapel," intrinsically linked to the Rastafarian tradition, was first brought to life by Bob Marley and later, Stephen Marley gave it new breath for the "Bob Mar: One Love" soundtrack. This track honors Haile Selassie, Ethiopia's past Emperor, who is seen as a godly figure in the Rastafarian religion. Serving as a spiritual ode, the song mirrors the Rastafarian faith's core ideals, including God's divine embodiment in Selassie, the significance of the Trinity, and the spiritual enlightenment Selassie provides to his admirers. Speculations: A pivotal part of the track's legacy is tied to its 1968 original pressing, which stands as a rare and holy recording deeply valued by Bob Marley. This piece reflects Marley's deep-seated spiritual convictions, shaped significantly by Rastafarian elder Mortimer Planno, a key figure in Marley's spiritual and musical odyssey. Initially available in a pressing of just 26 records, its re-release underscores its timeless message of peace, particularly resonant in times of worldwide unrest. Interpretations and Significance: At its heart, "Selassie Is the Chapel" interprets Selassie as more than a chapel, suggesting that divinity pervades all spaces, especially within the believer's heart and soul. It underscores that spiritual connection and divine encounters are internal, fueled by faith and individual enlightenment over physical places. In this composition, Bob Marley not only pays respects to Haile Selassie but also delves into faith, spiritual freedom, and emancipation themes. By encouraging listeners to cultivate their minds towards worshipping the living God, the song promotes a life of purpose and satisfaction derived from spiritual commitment. Describing Selassie as "the only King of Kings" and "Conquering Lion of Judah" aligns with scriptural prophecies, highlighting Selassie's esteemed divine rule and leadership. Furthermore, the storyline of seeking in the "book of Man" and unearthing insights about Selassie's importance reflects the Rastafarian vision of Selassie's savior role. The constant reassurance of finding Selassie's chapel internally and the unity call to extol his virtues summarizes a key Rastafarian principle: the pursuit of spiritual truth, unity, and empowerment by recognizing Selassie's godly monarchy. In essence, "Selassie Is the Chapel" stands as a profound testament to Bob Marley's Rastafarian beliefs, encapsulating the theology and spiritual worship of Haile Selassie. Through this melody, Marley extends an invitation to ponder on faith, identity, and the essence of divine adoration, championing a direct, internalized link with the divine. This track continues to be a reflection of Marley's musical and cultural influence, echoing liberation, spiritual depth, and the journey towards comprehension beyond the tangible world.
