Sweet Child O' Mine — Guns N’ Roses Lyrics

Soundtrack: Despicable Me 4

Sweet Child O' Mine Song Lyrics

[Verse 1]
She's got a smile that it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories
Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky
Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I stared too long, I'd probably break down and cry

[Chorus]
Woah, oh, oh
Sweet child o' mine
Woah, oh, oh, oh
Sweet love of mine

[Instrumental Break]

[Verse 2]
She's got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I'd hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain
Her hair reminds me of a warm, safe place
Where, as a child, I'd hide
And pray for the thunder and the rain to quietly pass me by
[Chorus]
Woah, oh, oh
Sweet child o' mine
Woah woah, oh, oh, oh
Sweet love of mine

[Instrumental Break]
Ooh!

[Chorus]
Oh, oh-oh-yeah
Woah, yeah
Woah, oh, h-o
Sweet child of mine
Woah-oh, woah-oh
Sweet love of mine
Woah, oh-oh-oh
Sweet child of mine, ooh, yeah
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Sweet love of mine

[Guitar Solo]

[Outro]
Where do we go?
Where do we go now?
Where do we go?
Mm-mm, oh, where do we go?
Where do we go now?
Oh, where do we go now? (Where do we go?)
Where do we go? (Sweet child)
Mm-huh, where do we go now?
Ah-yah-yah-yah-yah-yah-yah-yah-oh (Where do we go? Where do we go?)
Ooh, where do we go now? (Where do we go?)
Uh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh-oh, wow
Where do we go?
Oh-oh, where do we go now?
(Oh) Where do we go, oh-oh-oh-oh? (Oh, wow)
Where do we go now?
Where do we go?
Woah-oh, where do we go now?
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
Sweet child
Sweet child of mine

Annotation

When he thinks of her grin, it reminds him of a moment in his life when he was happy and everything was well. The childlike smile is the intuition of all humans. We lost it in the ruthless, egoistic culture. The girl's smile reminds him of the impulse for pure bliss, just like "fresh sky."

Axl Rose had a horrible childhood, including molestation and abuse. This line is particularly meaningful since it represents how her smile reminds him of the few happy childhood memories he has.
Erin Everly, Axl Rose's then-girlfriend and future ex-wife, was the "Sweet Child O' Mine" who inspired the song's lyrics. She was Don Everly's daughter, from The Everly Brothers.

Erin would subsequently say that she only married Rose because he threatened to kill himself if she didn't. Needless to say, the marriage did not last very long. Everly appears in the song's music video.

Why does he call his girlfriend a child? One may suppose that she recalls him of his childhood; she is as innocent as a child. The eyes are described as a portal to the soul. Although Axl claims he does not want to look into this woman's eyes and see misery, he most likely witnessed a lot of agony in the girl's eyes because he beat her.Axl, like many previous songwriters, compares parts of his lover's anatomy to other things. In this situation, her hair brings back a childhood memory—that of a location where a youngster who is afraid of the storm outside hides until it passes.

Axl had a traumatic upbringing in which he was beaten and his sister was raped. So he's referring to the place where he hid from it all.Erin Everly, Axl Rose's then-girlfriend and future ex-wife, was the "Sweet Child O' Mine" who inspired the song's lyrics. Apparently, Slash did not feel the same way:

When "Sweet Child O' Mine" was composed, I considered it a joke. I was just messing around when I came up with the riff. To me, it was a nightmare because, for some unknown reason, everyone caught up on it, and before you knew it, it had become a song. I despised it forever! The guitar solo is performed in a single take and is spontaneous. When it came time to record the song, I knew precisely where the melody was because I had played it so many times during rehearsals.According to Slash's autobiography, producer Spencer Proffer recommended including a dramatic breakdown before the end. Nobody had any notion what to do. As they listened to the music repeatedly in the control room, Axl began to wonder, "Where do we go? Where should we go now?"Where are we going?" Spencer turned down the music and suggested, "Why don't you just try singing that?" This is how the song's last section came to be.

About the Song

"Sweet Child O’ Mine" is the ninth track on Guns N’ Roses' debut album, *Appetite for Destruction*, released on July 21, 1987. This song is celebrated as the band's most successful single, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Lyrics and Analysis

The song begins with a memorable guitar riff by Slash, setting the stage for Axl Rose's nostalgic and emotive lyrics.

[Verse 1]

"She's got a smile that it seems to me

Reminds me of childhood memories

Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky"

These lines evoke a sense of innocence and joy, painting a vivid picture of pure, happy moments from the past. The reference to "childhood memories" establishes a deep emotional connection, while the "bright blue sky" symbolizes clarity and bliss.

[Chorus]

"Woah, oh, oh

Sweet child o' mine

Woah, oh, oh, oh

Sweet love of mine"

The chorus is simple yet powerful, reinforcing the affectionate and tender feelings expressed in the verses. The repetition of "Sweet child o' mine" emphasizes the deep bond and emotional significance of the person being sung about.

[Verse 2]

"She's got eyes of the bluest skies

As if they thought of rain

I'd hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain"

Here, Rose contrasts the beauty and tranquility of "bluest skies" with the potential sadness hinted at by "thought of rain." This juxtaposition adds emotional depth, highlighting the singer's desire to protect the person from sorrow.

While the song is widely adored, some members of the band have mixed feelings about it. Slash, the band's lead guitarist, has expressed ambivalence despite acknowledging the song's success:

"I didn’t hate it, but I wasn’t fond of 'Sweet Child O’ Mine.' The actual riff itself I love, but the song itself… But at the same time, it’s a great song—I’m not knocking it—but it just did not fit in with the rest of our, sort of, schtick."
Slash

This sentiment reflects the band's complex relationship with a track that, despite not fitting neatly into their usual style, became their biggest hit.
