New Boyfriend Lyrics – Beardo

Annotations and Meaning: "New Boyfriend" seemed to be a song to spin between jealousy and despair, introspection, and even a bit of question. After the breakup she has just been through, it goes into the songs that feel like the lyrics propose a story where the character tries to come to terms with their ex-acceptance and getting someone new. In the case of music, that seemed so global—a sentiment reflecting the feelings of multitudes of listeners who would have experienced the tensely sensitive situations between male and female, relationships, and breakups. The fact of referring to the "new boyfriend" again and again to an ex-partner could point not only to the fact of life moving on but also struggle in realization from the protagonist's side. It eludes to a sense of unworthiness and lacking self-esteem. It is evident in the lines "I always lose, I always lose, I always feel worse than I was before" and "You've got your light on inside of me. This emotional landscape is painted with a mix of sorrow, envy, and a touch of self-reflection. Furthermore, the song also brings in the efforts the main character tries to make for them to recover and move on by themselves, albeit in a resigned and accepting manner towards what prevails at the time. The mention of some news that she hears about the ex—maybe starting a family, of all things—really complicates the emotional processing of the breakup in that it could point to the realization that the protagonist isn't fully disengaged from the ex. As a whole, Beardo's "New Boyfriend" is a wonderful example of mixed feelings and conflicts created at the end of a relationship, marked with loss and jealousy in this bittersweet path to healing.
