Not Sorry For Loving You Text
[CALYPSO]
Someone arrived today
They said they're taking you away
That you're not mine to save
And soon I won't get to see your face
So I came by to say
You're unlike anyone I have ever known
Cause you're all I've ever known
And if I pushed you
Or if I came on too strong
Or if I ambushed you
For that, I'll say I was wrong
And if you hate me
Then I am sorry my love's too much for you
[CALYPSO, ENSEMBLE]
But I'm not sorry for loving you
I'm not sorry for loving you
I'm not sorry for loving you
I'm not sorry for loving you
[ODYSSEUS]
Calypso
[CALYPSO]
Let me speak
I spent my whole life here
Was cast away when I was young
Alone for a hundred years
I had no friends but the sky and sun
So when you washed ashore
I thought for sure that you were my dream come true
I thought I knew
So if I pushed you
Or if I came on too strong
Or if I ambushed you
For that, I'll say I was wrong
And if you hate me
Then I am sorry my love's too much for you
[CALYPSO, ENSEMBLE]
But I'm not sorry for loving you
I'm not sorry for loving you
I'm not sorry for loving you
I'm not sorry for loving you
[CALYPSO]
I'm not sorry
I'm angry and tired and restless and sad
I'm stuck in the moments I swore that we had
I wish you would chase me
Or try to embrace me
For once, I wish you would lie and say
[ODYSSEUS]
I love you
[CALYPSO]
You do?
[ODYSSEUS]
But not in the way that you want me to
[CALYPSO, ENSEMBLE]
I hate that I fell in love with you
Hate that I fell in love with you
Why did I fall in love with you?
Why did I fall in love with you?
What do I do with this love for you?
What do I do with this love for you?
How am I supposed to get over you?
How am I supposed to get over you?
Why in the world won't you love me too?

Annotations
In Epic the Musical, Calypso holds Odysseus prisoner, but it is unclear whether she SA'd him due to their lack of children and the absence of any explicit actions. Calypso's feelings towards Odysseus may have been genuine, but her crude methods change the perspective of the meaning behind the lyrics. Hermes, the messenger god, arrives to inform Calypso that Zeus has decided to free Odysseus from her island, leaving him to continue on his journey home. Calypso tries to justify her actions in keeping Odysseus prisoner, which is problematic as he never wanted to stay there for so long. Many people read her actions in the original epic as r*pe and SA, as Odysseus could not properly consent by being a prisoner and is said to cry every day. Calypso mirrors her actions with those of Zeus and male gods, which is not a good defense as very few mortal lovers give them honest consent. If this situation had its genders reversed, there would be little question that one side is clearly assaulting the other. Her song comes off less as genuine love and more like manipulation and defensiveness in light of being seen as a horrible person committing horrible acts. Odysseus calls out her name throughout the whole saga, as she was sent to an island impossible to find as punishment for her father's deeds during the war against Kronos and the titans. They have spent a lot of time together, and Calypso sees the time she spent with Odysseus as romantic, while Odysseus doesn't. He loves Calypso platically, loving her like family or a close friend, not in a romantic way. Calypso's curse is to fall in love with every man that washes ashore on her island, and once she does, they are given a way off the island to return to where they are from. However, due to her curse, Calypso cannot leave the island, leading to a vicious cycle of heartbreak. Odysseus won't love Calypso back, as he is already in love with Penelope (his wife).

Exploring the Meaning of Not Sorry For Loving You by Jorge Rivera-Herrans
The Struggle Between Love and Boundaries
The song "Not Sorry For Loving You" delves into Calypso’s struggle between expressing her deep love for Odysseus and acknowledging the boundaries he imposes. In this emotionally charged exchange, Calypso confronts the complex feelings of unrequited love, isolation, and rejection, while remaining unapologetic for her passion. The song taps into the vulnerability of love, especially when it is not reciprocated in the way one desires. Calypso, voiced by Barbara Wangui, presents a raw portrayal of someone who has spent a century in solitude, only to have her hopes of companionship crushed as Odysseus declines her affection.Technical Analysis
"Not Sorry For Loving You" merges orchestral melodies with intense vocals, underscoring the turbulent emotions within the lyrics. The instrumental arrangement incorporates strings and percussion, which provide a sense of both classical tragedy and modern musical appeal. The layered harmonies between Calypso and the ensemble add depth to her inner conflict, while Odysseus’ softer responses contrast with Calypso's intense devotion. Rivera-Herrans effectively combines dialogue and musical elements to portray the depth of mythological romance and emotional complexity.Emotional Analysis

Top 8 Songs Similar to "Not Sorry For Loving You" by Jorge Rivera-Herrans
1. "Calypso" by Suzanne Vega
"My love swims in a dream, her heart far away with him."Vega’s *Calypso* explores the same myth but from a gentler, more sorrowful angle. Both Calypsos are bound by love for Odysseus, but Vega’s character chooses a more passive lament for her unrequited love. The yearning in Vega’s lines mirrors Jorge Rivera-Herrans’ Calypso’s frustration and loneliness, but while Vega’s song embodies acceptance, *Not Sorry for Loving You* surges with unresolved passion and defiance.
2. "I Can’t Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt
"Cause I can't make you love me if you don't."Raitt’s iconic track parallels Calypso’s heartache, as both songs capture the pain of loving someone who can’t reciprocate. Calypso’s plea in *Not Sorry for Loving You* for Odysseus to love her reflects the same bittersweet resignation as Raitt’s message of unfulfilled love. The raw vulnerability of both songs highlights the agony of needing someone who will never be fully yours.
3. "Un-Break My Heart" by Toni Braxton
"Undo this hurt you caused, when you walked out the door and walked out of my life."Braxton’s soulful plea is echoed in Calypso’s expressions of heartbreak as she faces Odysseus' impending departure. Both songs detail the longing to undo the love that brings such sorrow, but where Braxton’s voice begs for healing, Calypso’s sentiments remain unapologetic, trapped in an endless loop of attachment and desire.
4. "Hurt" by Christina Aguilera
"If only I knew what I know today."Aguilera’s *Hurt* connects through the theme of regret. Much like Calypso’s painful realization of a love destined to remain one-sided, Aguilera’s lyrics address a love that’s lost but unforgettable. Both songs explore a haunting cycle of “what-ifs” that leaves both narrators caught between love, regret, and the impossibility of erasing past emotions.
5. "You’re Beautiful" by James Blunt
"But we shared a moment that will last till the end."Blunt’s hit touches on a fleeting love, much like the ephemeral relationship between Calypso and Odysseus. *You’re Beautiful* speaks to the bittersweet nature of a connection destined to be temporary. In *Not Sorry for Loving You*, Calypso’s voice resonates with similar intensity, recounting a profound yet doomed encounter that she knows will shape her forever.
6. "Hopelessly Devoted to You" by Olivia Newton-John
"Guess mine is not the first heart broken, my eyes are not the first to cry."Newton-John’s Sandy shares Calypso’s fierce loyalty, remaining steadfast in her love despite knowing it may not be returned. This song’s declaration of undying devotion reflects Calypso’s own reluctance to release Odysseus, even when it causes her anguish. Both women’s determination and willingness to wait for a love that may never come mirrors the sentiment of Rivera-Herrans’ Calypso.
7. "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye ft. Kimbra
"But I don’t wanna live that way, reading into every word you say."Gotye’s modern ballad of unresolved love is laced with feelings of betrayal and frustration, just as Calypso feels abandoned and wronged by Odysseus’ decision to leave. The echo of “getting over you” in *Not Sorry for Loving You* aligns with Gotye’s reflection on a love that turned out to be one-sided, leaving both narrators grappling with bitter memories.
8. "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri
"Who do you think you are, running 'round leaving scars?"Perri’s song resonates with Calypso’s sense of indignation over loving someone who seems to leave her broken and yearning. While *Not Sorry for Loving You* communicates undying love mixed with anger, *Jar of Hearts* voices defiance and the pain of betrayal. Both tracks underline the struggle of moving on from an intense love that leaves emotional scars.
