Build Me Up Buttercup Lyrics – The Foundations

"Build Me Up Buttercup" by The Foundations is a classic; appearing on many soundtracks, it brings a collection of 60s pop into play with its upbeat melody and deep lyrics. The line so simply put describes the emotional rollercoaster in a relationship that aches for firmness and warmth clearly not there, full of broken promises. This is best highlighted in the chorus: "Why do you build me up (build me up) buttercup, baby, just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around?" The word "buttercup" shows a form of endearment, while the song delves into the hurt felt for letting one down whom you care for emotionally. This is premised on the profundity of dependence and love broadcast throughout the song—hopes that persevere despite the letdowns, as illumined by "I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'." The line portrays how deep the singer's attachment is and how the hope remained constant despite repeated letdowns. The storyline goes in waiting for someone who constantly fails to come by, "I'll be over at ten, you told me time and again," and the frustration that follows, "But you're late, I wait around and then," describing the whole scene. Though it's a peppy, upbeat tune, the words express the theme of desire and resentment from all the heart-wrenching emotional turmoil of wanting the one you love to finally be there for you exactly as you wish. The repeated pleas "So build me up (build me up) buttercup, don't break my heart" underscore the desperate appeal for constancy by presenting the tension of a likely heartbreak alongside that. "Build Me Up Buttercup" is one of those songs that remain chiseled in classic, timeless form because of what it represents: that everybody, somewhere, someday is in the game of wanting love, dealing with disappointment, and subsequently longing for that one love to be the builder, not the breaker. These kinds of popular songs remain on contemporary soundtracks for all time because now, more than ever, they are able to speak to audiences across generational lines.
