Chan eil a Chuis a Cordadh Rium Lyrics – Kim Carnie

"Chan eil a Chuis a Cordadh Rium" by Kim Carnie is a Gaelic song that poignanntly captures a sense of discontent and longing amidst the backdrop of Scottish Highland life. The title, translating to "I Do Not Like the Situation," sets a tone of dissatisfaction that weaves through the song's narrative. The song begins with the protagonist waking up early for a festival, but there's an imediate sense of unease: "Is trom mo cheum 's cho neònach e" (My step is heavy and it's so strange). This hints at a deeper feeling of discontent that extends beyond this specific day. As the song progresses, it paints scenes of rural life, like preparing new potatoes and shellfish, juxtaposing mundane daily tasks against an overarching feeling of restlessness, as reiterated in the chorus, "Chan eil a' chùis a' còrdadh rium" (I do not like the situation). This refrain serves as a constant reminder of the singer's inner turmoil amidst everyday life. The narrative then shifts to interactions with various merchants, highlighting the singer's feelings of disillusionment within these exchanges. Waiting until nightfall for a fair price or dealing with merchants, each encounter adds to the sense of dissatisfaction with the transactions that define daily life. The singer's encounters with characters like the merchant of Mine and the Tea Merchant further emphasize a sense of alienation and discontent: "Thug thu riarachadh do chàich, Ged nach eil fàirdean dhòmhs' agad" (You satisfied everyone else, But you have no greetings for me). This reflects feelings of being overlooked and undervalued in community interactions. Overall, "Chan eil a Chuis a Cordadh Rium" uses vivid imagery and a recurring chorus to express a deep sense of longing and dissatisfaction in a life that feels routine and unchanging. The song resonates with the universal theme of seeking more meaningful experiences beyond the everyday mundanities.
