In the Very Next Moment Lyrics – Sherry! Cast

In the Very Next Moment Text

---

COMPANY
In the very next moment
Who knows what fate has in store?
Who can say what is waiting
Beyond the very next door?
We can't wait one moment more!

DAISY STANLEY
(spoken)
What is it, John?

JOHN
Two more cables and a box of candy,
And some cookies from Mahatma Gandhi!

ALL
Mahatma Gandhi!

DAISY STANLEY
(spoken)
What have you got, Sarah? Ooo! That looks interesting!

SARAH
Four more cables and a case of wine
From Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein!

ALL
Gertrude Stein!

EDNA
(spoken)
Daisy, what's happening?

DAISY STANLEY
(spoken)
Oh, Edna!
(sung)
If you only knew what's been going on
You would not believe it, my dear!
In this morning's mail, just the stamps alone
Would have paid your bills for a year!

SARAH
Jascha Heifetz sent him cologne

JOHN
The Mayo Clinic delivered his chair

DAISY STANLEY
The New York Times won't leave us alone
And Leopold Stokowski sent a lock of hair...

ALL
If you only knew what we've planned for him;
He'll have fun from morning 'til night

WOMEN
We've brought books and games

MEN
And some magazines

WOMEN
We won't let him out of our sight

JOHN
There's no doubt about it at all

SARAH
God blessed us when he took that fall

ALL
And we're sure that he would be happy too
If he only knew what we know now!

LADIES
Oh Daisy
We can picture you all sitting by the fire
Hearing from his very lips
Some immortal verse or maybe some inspiring--

DAISY STANLEY
(spoken)
Oh, everyone, this is Mr. Whiteside's secretary! Can we help you Miss Cutler?

MAGGIE
He takes fresh brioche and the London Times
With his English Gentleman tea
We'll need French gaufrettes, Turkish cigarettes
And some typing paper for me
(spoken)
I don't suppose there's a branch of Hammacher-Schlemmer in Mesalia?

DAISY STANLEY
(sung)
You don't have to worry at all
The whole town is right here on call

MAGGIE
Bless your tender heart
(aside)
She would fall apart
If she only knew what I know now!

JOHN
Air express from Mr. William Beebe

SARAH
"Merry Christmas, Sherry!"
Her name is Phoebe!

DR. BRADLEY
(spoken)
Here we are, all merry and bright!

ALL
In the very next moment
What wonders wait to appear

DR. BRADLEY
(spoken)
Bring our little patient out, Miss Preen!

ALL
And the very next moment
Is here!

SHERRY
(spoken)
I may vomit.
