Raise Your Voice Song Lyrics
DELORIS:
First rule of singin' -
Get the rafters ringin'!
Toss everything in -
dig down deep inside.
When you’ve got a song worth hearin'.
There’s one thing to do -
just keep your fear from interferin',
and let that sucker burst through!
Raise your voice!
Lift it up to heaven!
Raise your voice!
Come on, don’t be shy!
If you feel it, why conceal it?
Let your soul rejoice!
Raise the stakes!
Raise your game!
Raise your voice!
[Okay, now it’s your turn,
who’s gonna step up
and make some real noise?
Aah, now don’t be tryin’ to hide from me,
Mary Robert!]
Why so quiet?
Get right up and try it!

"Raise Your Voice" is part of the "Sister Act The Musical" and an anthem symbolizing the awakening of one's courage to blatantly sing. Woven into the plot by Deloris Van Cartier and the nuns, this song was a key moment and almost summed up everything the musical was about: change, unity, and the strength of music to soothe and raise the spirit.
The song opens with Deloris urging that people should sing out and sing with soul: "First rule of singin' - Get the rafters ringin'! Toss everything in - dig down deep inside." This is a trigger to a personal journey of self-expression and this very moment would probably liberate this character from his or her inhibitions.
The assertiveness builds up rather slowly as the introverted and hesitant nuns are pushed on by Deloris: "Raise your voice! Lift it up to heaven! Raise your voice! Come on, don't be shy!" This singing is like an alarm, not only for the characters but also for the audience or anybody out there looking for inspiration to be brave in speaking up and outstanding.
The interaction between Deloris and the nuns, especially Mary Robert, exhibits a transformation from fear and obedience to boldness and joy. The words "Why so quiet? Get right up and try it!" followed by the hesitant but growing contribution of the nuns depict this path of finding the voice and the joy of expressing it.
The climax of the song, with every nun shouting, "Raise your voice! Spread it cross the sky! Blast it! Blare it! Stand and share it! Help the world rejoice!" delivers the message of collective empowerment and the power of community through music. Basically put, it is a celebration of newfound strength and spirit within a community whereby music could bring about this insuperable end. "Raise Your Voice" thus embodies all that "Sister Act The Musical" is about: reform, empowerment, and the utter transcendence of all truly great music. It calls one to be oneself and speak out loud, and join others in joy with the testimony that when a voice is lifted with song—in inspiration—it is one beautiful song to life.
