About "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp Minor"

This is one of the most famous pieces written by Franz Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp Minor. Written in 1847 and published in 1851, the piece is widely regarded as quite an exceptional display of technical bravura and drama and very often associated with the extreme virtuosic demands it lays upon the pianist.

History and Composition.

The piece is in two main sections: the *Lassan* and the *Friska*. Lassan: slow, touching melancholic themes with some playful moments, all set within a dark, contemplative mood. Hungarian folk melodies can often be found here reflecting the composers' interest in national heritage and his admiration of the Romani musicians of his time. The *Friska* is fast, and dancey. Opening up in F-sharp minor, the piece transitions to F-sharp major after a sequence of terrifically virtuosic passages, representing the hectic theme. Here is the point with an augmented tempo and the application of rapid, alternate octaves, creating great tension before arriving at the grand climax. From here on there is basically the complex use of thematic transformation in keeping with motivic development by Liszt.

Arrangements and Popular Culture.

Originally for solo piano, Liszt's colleague Franz Doppler had it orchestrated so that it could be played by bigger ensembles and this would reach more audiences—a step to bring the music closer to people. With all these improvements through the years, the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 easily blends into pop culture as part of the regular cartoon background, for example, on Tom and Jerry, contributing to its strength in being recognizable classical music.

Technical Analysis.

The masterstroke of the rhapsody in this regard is Liszt's use of the csárdás form, a structure that clearly derives from the traditional Hungarian folk dance. The dynamic exchange between the slow and fast sections, combined with the intricate harmonies of Liszt and the virtuosic piano techniques, makes for an exciting and interesting musical narrative. Some of its popularity surely is due to the fact that it combines folk elements with high art, showing off Liszt's own famous ability to take the low arts and bring them high enough to make it into the concert repertoire. Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 remains one of the true testaments to his genius of composition and blend of nationalistic elements with virtuosic showmanship—all of which secure a place of great favor with pianists and audiences alike.
