Flesh Lyrics – Object as Subject
Soundtrack Album: Little Wing
Flesh Text
So many years waisted
A ghost in my own skin
Shed this burden
Untie these robes, bind me
To this legacy
Live this low medicine
I'd still explain
Just a time
To give you the key
A reading makes it true
Have my body been through
Take me from the night
Oooooo, Oooooo
I hear you calling us
See you make fun of us
See you crash by us
Hear you call us
See you make fun of us
Don't you prepare now
Don't you prepare now
You You
So many years waisted
A ghost in my own skin
Shed this burden
Untie these robes, bind me
To this legacy
Live this low medicine
I'd still explain
Just a time
To give you the key
A reading makes it true
Have my body been through
Take me from the night
Oooooo, Oooooo
I hear you calling us
See you make fun of us
See you crash by us
Hear you call us
See you make fun of us
Don't you prepare now
Don't you prepare now
You You

"Flash" by Object as Subject seems to dip into the self-realization, shedding off the burdens, the longing of liberation from the past or one's demons. The words paint one sensation of a person's shadow haunting one, or in a totally different perspective, one can feel like one is locked up within his own body—a "ghost in my own skin." It points toward a meaning that is indicative of or a desire for change in or from the confinement of breaking free from oneself—meaning one's own limitations or societies'.
It very well explains possibly the mentioning of "low medicine" and "bind me to this legacy," symbolize what the difficulties of the norms one has inherited, and the pain or toxicity one gets from not following what he really is or desires. The call to "Untie these robes" was a metaphorical call to be able to be freed from the chains, to live a more real life.
The chorus sections, with their ethereal "Oooooo, Oooooo," seem to beg out for that connection; perhaps it is rather metaphorical of the way in which mankind needs or yearns for understanding or acceptance from within and without. The repetition of seeing and hearing judgment ("See you make fun of us" / "Hear you call us") could connote that judgment from without could only make it so much worse. This conveys—solely by either misunderstanding or marginalization—the already unbearable personal struggle.
Broadly, "Flash" is a grappling work with hard travel of self-discovery and at the same time embodies an internal fight for personal freedom while being judged by others on one side and struggling with certain issues and fears on the other.
