A Cautionary Tale Lyrics – Auli’i Cravalho

"A Cautionary Tale" by Auli'i Cravalho, as part of the musical context in which it appears, serves as a narrative device to underscore the themes of morality, temptation, and the consequences of one's actions. The opening lines, "It's a cautionary tale of fear and lust and pride, Based on actual events where people died," immediately set a serious tone, suggesting that the story to follow is one with significant lessons. The interjection by Damian, "No one died," serves to lighten the mood, suggesting a blend of humor and seriousness in the message being conveyed. The song then poses a critical question about the lengths one might go to achieve popularity and attractiveness. "But how far would you go, To be popular and hot? Would you resist temptation?" This question challenges the listener to consider their own values and the potential cost of compromising them for superficial gains. The chorus, "No, you would not, Just admit it, sometimes, Mean is what you are," reflects on the human tendency to sometimes choose unkindness or selfishness over kindness and integrity. It acknowledges a harsh reality: being mean or cruel can often be an easier path and can even bring temporary success or gain. The song continues to weave its moral message with lines like "You can't buy integrity at the mall, it's not for sale," emphasizing the idea that true moral values and integrity cannot be purchased or superficially acquired but must be cultivated internally. Overall, "A Cautionary Tale" serves as a reflection on the pitfalls of succumbing to negative impulses for personal gain. It highlights the importance of integrity and the potential consequences of choosing a path driven by fear, lust, and pride. The song uses humor and a light-hearted tone to deliver a serious message about personal morality and the choices one makes in the pursuit of popularity and acceptance.
