Annotations and Meaning:

"Funkytown" by Lipps Inc.: One is desperately looking for a way out and some lively, if bustling, place to be free, living by one's own rules, teetering at the brink, letting your dreams go wild, and, relievedly enough, leaving behind all that greyness of your former life. It is a way out from the dullness of the environment, where the driving beat and repetitive chorus of this song seem to resonate a desire for such a turn into a more satisfying milieu. The line "Gotta make a move to a town that's right for me / Town to keep me movin', keep me groovin' with some energy" is repeated and lays out the whole song. The message is one of timeless dissatisfaction and striving to locate a place that will be in tune with one's spirit and sprightliness. "Funkytown" is the images for this ideal place, overflowing with excitement and lifelikeness. Maybe it will be dull or unexciting in contrast to the present location. It was set in such a way the song is—with its chorus of repetition and insistence, "Won't you take me to Funkytown?"—which accentuates the longing and the necessary desire to get there in some metaphorical place. The refrain is also acting not only as a very catchy hook but also taking on a transcendent symbol of the kind of deep-seated human desire for joy and a sense of belonging. The dialogue of movement, in lyric and rhythm, is urgent action: it reflects the culture of dance during disco fever, when this was most popular. It captures disco music if not only as a genre but as a cultural movement towards freedom of expression and escapism. A part of the soundtrack for "Rest in Peace," it would seem "Funkytown" contributes an energetic, uplifting element to a film that might well be showcasing different forms of transformation and celebration or instances when people are looking for something different or new.
