Dear God – Shug Lyrics – Fantasia

Soundtrack Album: The Color Purple

Dear God – Shug Text

[Verse]
Got about a million tingles sneakin' on up my spine
I wash her body and it feel like I'm prayin'
Try not to look, but my eyes ain't obeyin'
Guess I found out what all of the fuss is about

[Chorus]
Shug Avery
This who they talkin' 'bout
And everything they say is true, too
Shug Avery

"Dear God – Shug" by Fantasia delves into the complex emotions and exoeriences of an individual deeply affected by Shug Avery's presence. The song portrays a blend of reverence, temptation, and discovery, encapsulating the enigmatic allure of Shug. The verse introduces a sensory experience with "a million tingles sneakin' on up my spine," suggrsting an overwhelming and almost involuntary physical reaction to Shug. The act of washing her body is equated to a spiritual experience, indicating a deep, almost sacred connection felt towards her. This line blurs the boundaries between physicality and spirituality, hinting at the profound impact Shug has on the narrator. The struggle between desire and restraint is evident in the line "Try not to look, but my eyes ain't obeyin'." This internal conflict highlights the magnetic pull of Shug's charm and the difficulty of resisting it. It paints a picture of someone who is captivated despite their efforts to maintain control or distance. The chorus, "Shug Avery, This who they talkin' 'bout, And everything they say is true, too, Shug Avery," confirms the widespread fascination with Shug. It acknowledges the rumors and talks surrounding her, validating them as accurate. This repetition of her name adds to her mystique, emphasizing her significance and the undeniable truth of her influence. "Dear God – Shug" captures the essence of Shug Avery's character through the eyes of someone profoundly affected by her. The song weaves together themes of temptation, admiration, and the powerful impact of a person who defies conventional norms, leaving a lasting impression on those she encounters.
