Soundtrack Album: The Color Purple

Shug Avery Text

[Refrain]
Shug Avery's comin' to town
Shug Avery's comin'
Shug Avery's comin' to town
You know that she's comin'
She sting like a honey bee
Sweet pain comin' over me
Skirt so short, gonna shock your ma
Make a man wanna break the law

[Verse 1]
She's a tramp in a tight dress (Cryin' shame)
Lookin' like a hot mess (Shug's her name)
Bouncin' in the bed (Drinkin' all your gin)
Bumpin' in the shed (Lovin' all the men)

[Chorus]
Ain't no other woman like Shug
You know she's comin'
Ain't no other woman like Shug
When Shug come across that county line, county line

[Refrain]
Oh, Shug Avery comin' to town
Shug Avery comin' to town
Lock up all your mens and your young boys, too
Got no friends 'cept the ones she screw
Shug Avery comin' to town
Shug Avery's comin' to town
Shug Avery's comin'
Shug Avery's comin' to town
You know that she's comin'

[Verse 2]
Got about a million questions
Rollin' around my head
What she wear?
How her hair?
Is she skinny?
Is she stout?
Must be something to fuss about

[Chorus]
Ain't no other woman like Shug
Don't you know it ain't no lie?
When Shug come across that county line

[Bridge]
Ooh, that Shug, you know she no good
A snake in the woods, gonna poison you
You don't understand what it do to a man
When you in her hands and she turn that screw
Better say farewell, 'cause you're going to Hell
But a man feel swell when he in her spell
Better lock your doors, better change your drawers
She's comin', comin', comin', comin'

[Refrain]
Shug Avery comin' to town
Shug Avery comin' to town
Lock up all your mens and your young boys, too
Got no friends 'cept the ones she screw
Shug Avery comin' to town
Shug Avery comin' to town (Comin' to town, to town, to town)
Shug Avery comin' to town (You don't understand what it do to a man)
Shug Avery comin' to town (You don't understand what it do to a man)
Shug Avery comin' to town

"Shug Avery" by Fantasia is a vivid portrayal of a charismatic and contriversial woman, Shug Avery, who captivates and unsettles the town with her arrival. The song uses a blend of admiration, caution, and gossip to paint a picture of Shug's alluring yet potentially destructive nature. The refrain, "Shug Avery's comin' to town," sets the tone of anticipation and unesse, suggesting that her presence is both awaited and feared. The description of her "sting like a honey bee" and her daring fashion evokes an image of a woman who is both attractive and dangerous, capable of causing "sweet pain." The verses describe Shug as a free-spirited, unconventional woman, defying societal norms. Terms like "tramp in a tight dress" and "drinkin' all your gin" depict her as a rule-breaker and a rebel. Her interactions with men are portrayed as scandalous and unrestrained, leading to the community's mixed reactions of fascination and disapproval. The chorus emphasizes Shug's uniqueness, "Ain't no other woman like Shug," highlighting her distinctiveness and the impact she has when crossing the "county line." This line suggests that her influence extends beyond physical boundaries, affecting everyone who comes into contact with her. The song also reflects the town's curiosity and judgment towards Shug, with lines like "Got about a million questions" and "Must be something to fuss about." These lines reveal the community's intrigue and the gossip that surrounds her character. In the bridge, Shug is metaphorically compared to a "snake in the woods," hinting at a seductive yet potentially harmful nature. This part of the song warns of the consequences of being under her spell, suggesting a loss of control and potential downfall. "Shug Avery" is a complex song that explores themes of female autonomy, sexuality, and societal judgment. It portrays Shug as a figure who challenges norms and provokes strong reactions, embodying both the allure and the peril of defying expectations.
