Extra Time (Not That Great) Text
Jason Alexander, Adam Sandler, Sadie Sandler, cast.
Well, Benji, Jada's substitute teacher is a horror show.
Making the kids read big books.
No! So Daddy got Jada something no other kid gets. What, Daddy?
Extra time. The other kids are sweating all the answers they're forgetting all except for mine.
Cause my kids got extra time.
Mom, should we put the lizard in my room?
Cause the birthday party's coming up and out right now, honey, Daddy's bragging.
Nothing has extra time!
My kids are everything and so I pulled a
couple strings and now I made it all fine.
Cause my kids got extra time.
When you're all with Dr. Skin, you're a true VIP.
Cause rules do not apply to me.
Give me that extra time.
I'm talking to you to give advice. I don't need advice. I'm awesome. Nah, you're miserable. Wait, what? Look, people don't realize the pressure someone like me is under. My family is so amazing, so I have a lot more to love too. I have to get into the best middle school and have the best party and yeah, only the best people around me. No, you don't. You don't get what being awesome is like. But you are not. I'm what? Brace yourself.
Not that great.
I know you guys are proud but your house is kinda loud and your dad's in middleweight.
Your family's not that great. A middleweight? He's the face on all these flyers.
And you're living four miles.
All our countertops are quarts. He gets paid to burn up warts. Compa's looks like Britney Spears. If you had six or seven beers, I don't mean to denigrate. We're not that... great.
You're great. But no one's that great. We're all just people and lizards.
If you can take a step back,
see yourself for what you are.
You'll find that you're an even brighter star. So when I'm not that great.
But I can feel that weight
Coming off like heavy gear
After 11 stressful years
To my fellow average peers
I can finally relate It's not bad at all
To be not that great
Extra time!

The song humorously addresses themes of parental pressure, the quest for exceptionalism, and the realization that striving for perceived greatness can often lead to a disconnect from genuine self-worth and happiness.
The narrative of the song unfolds within a story that critiques the modern obsession with success and privilege, as depicted through the experiences of the characters in the Netflix animated film Leo. It portrays a satirical take on how parents might go to lengths to give their children advantages ("extra time"), suggesting a commentary on the competitive nature of academic and social standings.
Furthermore, the lyrics weave a tale of realization and self-reflection, leading to the understanding that being "not that great" is perfectly acceptable. This resonates with the broader themes of Leo, which balances humor with heartwarming lessons on self-acceptance and the value of genuine connections over superficial achievements.
This song, along with others in the Leo soundtrack, contributes to the film's exploration of adolescence, family dynamics, and the societal pressures that shape our perceptions of success and failure. Through its comedic yet insightful approach, "Extra Time (Not That Great)" encourages a reassessment of what truly matters, advocating for a more relaxed and self-compassionate perspective toward life's challenges and expectations.
