Annotations and Urban Dance Squad's "Dejsonification" of "Deeper Shade Of Soul" deftly addressed questions of authenticity, innovatory impulses in music, and the 'color line' in race with a thrilling cocktail of hip-hop and funk. It opens with an amazed, defiant attitude: "Surprise, surprise, / So you rub your eyes, /Never knew UDS / So cool as ice?" It is setting the stage for the band as they go to confront stereotypes and misjudgments regarding their music and identity. The line, "hear the vibes, man, they'll stupefy," means that their music was vital in such a way that it could stupefy a man, therefore going beyond one's imagination. The lyrics directly take on simplistic perceptions; lines such as "Ducks – categorize us as hard criers, that's a lie, we know why we're occupiers" are almost an affront to how others might take them on at face value and simplify the matters they cover. Style is present in the method of Urban Dance Squad music, defining that it emanates from a 'much deeper color of soul' that might be construed to mean much more profound and fuller dimensions musically or culturally than one might get from the original angle. This is furthered by the lyric, "We blend everything, with the color of skin, under the skin, we're in like Flynn," proving that their music defies racial and stylistic borders, inviting fusion and harmonization of influences. The chorus "Deeper shade of soul" is nothing more than the repetition of a line that emphasizes depth, literally. The soulfulness and cultural significance are both epitomized in the narrative of the song. In this light, the song aims to make an effort to reshape the perceptions of the listeners and set expectations about what music is and who its creators are by pushing against the genre/cultural categorization of the world. Thematic elements of the show might be mirrored in the song's inclusion on the soundtrack to "Snack Shack," possibly featuring narrative arcs of overcoming stereotypes, personal identity exploration, or cultural fusion.
