Oakland Blackouts — Hieroglyphics Lyrics

Oakland Blackouts Song Lyrics

[Intro: "Animaniacs" Sample]
"I don't know what makes that
That's why I need to you leave!
I'm very busy trying to discover a new science!"

[Verse 1: Opio]
Yeahhh, beats like this you just can't peep
It's a natural, international, not that same ol' sh*t
Get split in half, figuratively speakin' take a bloodbath
When I run past MC's, drop the mic like the Sunsplash
Is in Jamaica, the heart-breaka lyrics
Like a stake through your left pectoral your sh*t is horrible
I'm clean, like brand new Mo-Mo's on a Porsche
And your sh*t is sittin' on rims, let me begin
To elaborate, rings on his hands like each finger was Saturn
And the latest fashions but the same patterns
Kept flashin' up in his rap, concerned with glamorous
Tales of fatalities like he was Tarantino
The an*logy is that we know that Quentin write fiction
Fantasies, woven intricately, while I'm predictin'
Every motion, them slight changes in your tone of voice
Is a toast to your parasitic choice of speak
Leakin' cold blood out the arteries if you bit
'Cause we done said it, you can't configurate
Like the great Hieroglyphics resistance we incinerate
Lit it up, now I'm finna cut
Peep the demonstration of uniqueness

[Hook: Del + Opio]
It could be fatal, wait 'til Del come back out
And act out emotions in Oakland Blackouts
Don't you ever forget, it could be fatal
Wait 'til O come back out
And act out emotions in Oakland Blackouts

[Verse 2: Del the Funky Homosapien]
Hurrah, here come Del to dispel the blahs
Cause and effect, pause for respect
Collection, diction friction, depictin' violence
Volatile with my profile like Molotov's
MC's must be on auto-pilot, waddle silent
Like some platypuses; Del is down with data pushers
With top secret floppy disk and battle armor and Mecha
Plus all the rhymes that I'm bangin' are double-decker, to check ya

[Verse 3: Opio]
Electri-fyin', defyin' laws of gravity (what?)
Avidly rapidly firin' lyrics, I'm shatterin'
The abdominal cavity, then I'm travellin' out the spinal
Finalizin' your paralysis on the microphone (what?)
The catalyst is the capital L-I-N-D-S-E-Y
MC's try to test but they mind gets blown

[Hook: Del + Opio]
Don't you ever forget, it could be fatal
Wait 'til Del come back out
And act out emotions in Oakland Blackouts
Don't you ever forget, it could be fatal
Wait 'til O come back out
And act out emotions in Oakland Blackouts
[Verse 4: Del the Funky Homosapien]
Ain't no MC hurtin' me, matter of fact you work for me
Havoc-stricken palladiums made me numb
To anything you speak to desecrate the great Hieroglyphics
And with it goes the flows that chop egos to segments
Behind the decimal points, I point backwards
When you lack words, you toil but boil, I coil clowns
All around repellin', sellin' statues of wack groups
Statues for Hieroglyphic travellers
Any lackluster MC's, I mallet ya, right on your cranium crack
It bust your teeth through your limbs and then tip you over
If you know of Del, well then
I ill constantly with consonants, followed by nouns
And make mounds of manuscripts to whip challengers
That ain't too talented, so before I reach my destintation
Let's waste some MC's for fun (yeah)
I understand the fans needs so I feed 'em smörgåsbord
So they can gorge, and MC's can gouge they eyes out
From the teargas emitted from my tongue, leavin' fans sprung
And for the crews who high-strung, eat dung (ewww)
They just gnats and ticks, buggin' me (bzzzzzzz)
Huggin' me nuts in a cuddly clutch
My hieroglyphic theory is validated by facts
Dilated the tracks, so they wide and fat
Violated the wax, but colonized the wise words
With more enzymes ten times nutritional
Unintentional, my flows just go there, yeah
[Hook: Opio + Del]
Don't you ever forget, it could be fatal
Wait 'til O come back out
And act out emotions in Oakland Blackouts
Don't you ever forget, it could be fatal
Wait 'til Del come back out
And act out emotions in Oakland Blackouts
Don't you ever forget, it could be fatal
Wait 'til Souls come back out
And act out emotions in Oakland Blackouts
Don't you ever forget, it could be fatal
Wait 'til … come back out
And act out emotions in Oakland Blackouts

[Outro: Opio + Del]
It could be fatal
Wait 'til Cas come back out
Time to scam all you MC's
Yeahhh, yeah, it could be fatal
Wait 'til Pep and Jay-Biz come back out, hahaha
You know what I'm sayin'? Just wait
*cut and scratched* "My rhyme will remain Hieroglyphic"

Artist Info

Hieroglyphics is a group of underground hip-hop artists from Oakland, California. Created in the early '90s by rapper Del the Funky Homosapien, the crew has since gained much respect in the underground for their complex lyrics, intelligent wordplay, and jazzy beats. Their first album was 3rd Eye Vision, which was published in 1998 and still is considered a classic by most fans of underground hip-hop. The members of Hieroglyphics are Del, along with A-Plus, Tajai, and Opio. Their flow is particularly known for rap, other matters, and serpentine rhymes, using ingenious metaphors. They, being independent, have their own label, Hiero Imperium, under which they've been able to maintain control over their creative processes. Over time, Hieroglyphics has developed a very big cult following based on the fact that they tour constantly and usually have very fierce live shows.

Annotations and Meaning:

Intro:
The song starts with "Animaniacs" samples, which set an odd, surprising scene. The quote about discovering new science points to a group that creates their music with unconventional ways.

Verse 1:
Opio declares that theirs is unique, natural, and international. He plays with cumulatively vivid metaphors for his lyricism—a bloodbath in the opener and the weak rappers to Quentin Tarantino's love of fictional tales. The verse slams many other rappers for a superficial approach and not being original.

"Is in Jamaica, the heart-breaka lyrics / Like a stake through your left pectoral your sh*t is horrible"

Opio stresses that their lyrics cut deeper than the rest, who are so shallow with their lyrics.
Hook:
The chorus, taken by Del and Opio, further informs the listener that their shows in "Oakland Blackouts" could be deadly, a statement metaphorical for their potency and strength.

Verse 2:
The next verse is Del the Funky Homosapien, who states his lyrical ability by the way he words his rhymes. He combines intricate imagery, likening his rhyming to Molotov cocktails, and outlines just how cerebral his wordiness is. He derides other MCs for their programmed and boring presentation.

"MC's must be on auto-pilot, waddle silent / Like some platypuses; Del is down with data pushers"

In this line, he throws a jab at other rappers being dull, insipid, and unoriginal, and in contrast, he hails his own crew.
Verse 3:
Opio's back, firing off bars that bend the laws of physics and cut through the competition. He reiterates that he's a master with the bars and how no other MCs can step to his game.

"Electri-fyin', defyin' laws of gravity (what?) / Avidly rapidly firin' lyrics, I'm shatterin'"

This shows the self-confidence he has and what a devastating thing for his words to have said.
Verse 4:
Del concludes with a powerful verse, declaring his supremacy in the rap game: dropping energetic yet fierce imagery of how he dismembers feeble rappers. He demonstrates the word 'lyrical' with a lot of complexity and wordplay, marking a statement on high talent.

"I ill constantly with consonants, followed by nouns / And make mounds of manuscripts to whip challengers"

Del illustrates his dexterity with language and his knack for generating multi-layered, substantive lyrics. And let it be known that this is all about the supremacy of lyrics and the Hieroglyphics-brand style. Descriptive metaphors and trippy wordplay are burning incense at the temple of their superiority over the rest of the hip-hop cosmos. This consists primarily of the crew dogging most other emcees for just not bringing anything to the table that's new or meaningful. Multiple notices of the "Oakland Blackouts" only serve to underscore the heavy impact of their rote. This is a party for their abilities and a statement concerning the group's hierarchal position in the hip-hop world

Theme and Interpretation:

The song is based on the theme of lyrical supremacy on some kind of Hieroglyphics-style beat. The group pretty much borrowed all kinds of wordplay and crazy metaphors to come off like lords in the land of rap. They throw attacks at other rappers for being unoriginal and having shallow content. The warnings of the "Oakland Blackouts" are at least in part symbolic of the positive power of their music and performances. Really, it's a boasting track all about the group's skills and telling everyone where they fit in the wonderful world of hip-hop.
