What's Up Fatlip? Lyrics – Fatlip

Soundtrack Album: White Men Can't Jump
What's Up Fatlip? Text
[Intro]
Uh, what's goin' on?
Uh, uh, what's goin' on? (Yo)
What's goin' on? (Check it out)
Uh, check it out (One, two)

[Verse 1]
Feelin' downtrodden, fresh kid turned rotten
I can't believe how naive that I've gotten
Over the years seems like I'm gettin' dumber
Reminiscing to a time when I was younger with a hunger
Full of dreams, determination, self-esteem
But now it seems they hesitate to be on my team
You know the routine, when you winnin', they're grinnin'
All up in your face, like they was wit' you from the beginnin'
But on the flipside, when you're washed up like a riptide
Fools clown 'bout how you slipped and let sh*t slide
Beside the fact, my voice is wack
Clowns is runnin' 'round, talkin' 'bout I smoke crack
Ain't got no homies that got my back
Yeah, I'm a brother, but sometimes I don't feel black
My girl is white, my game ain't tight
Niggas who ain't seen me in a while be like "Dude, you aight?"

[Chorus]
Who am I kiddin', who am I foolin'
When they be like "What's up Fatlip?," and I say "Coolin'"
Who am I kiddin', who am I foolin'
When they be like "What's up Fatlip?," and I say "Coolin'"
Who am I kiddin', who am I foolin'
When they be like "What's up Fatlip?," and I say "Coolin'"
Who am I kiddin', who am I foolin'
When they be like—

[Verse 2]
I go out like a sucka almost every day
In the back of your mind, you're probably thinkin' I was gay
But naw, I'm just a b**ch-ass nigga
The type that'd get jacked if I was a rich ass nigga
See, I been a loser just about all my life
Type that tryna turn a ho into a housewife
What do you expect, I give respect
And feel for hoes niggas keep in check
I'm far from hard, emotionally scarred
On Pico Boulevard, I was regarded as a retard
I make myself sick, get on my own nerves
Immature, insecure grown up nerd
Has-been MC on a label that's unstable
Choppin' bliggy on the table

When they be like "What's up Fatlip?"
[Outro]
Yeah, yeah, man
What's up, man?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I been workin' on my steps
Hey, check this out, check this out
"She keeps on"
"She keeps on"
Ahh
I still got it, ahh
Like, ahh
Like, ahh

  • Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
  • Lyricist: Fatlip
  • Composer: Fatlip
  • Album: Featured in the album "The Loneliest Punk"

Artist Information:

Fatlip was born Derrick Stewart and is a rapper from Los Angeles, California. He is probably best known for his work with the influential hip-hop outfit, The Pharcyde. The group came to prominence in the 1990s and had their strange, funny, and at times melancholic attitude to rap music. Fatlip himself is characterized by introspective lyrics and by a special, often self-deprecating, sense of humor. Following The Pharcyde, he embraced a solo career with his debut work, "The Loneliest Punk," representing alternative hip-hop in 2005. He has been considered one of the major alternative hip-hop musicians and still remains one of the genre's respected figures.

Annotations and Meaning:

The song begins with a simple yet poignant introduction that reflects on the passage of time and changes in the artist's life.
"Feelin' downtrodden, fresh kid turned rotten"
The first verse depicts Fatlip's transformation from an optimistic teen to a disillusioned adult. He recalls a time when he was full of hope and confidence, but now he feels betrayed by those who once supported him.
"You know the routine, when you winnin', they're grinnin' / All up in your face, like they was wit' you from the beginnin'
He underlines the unpredictable character of people who support them during times of success but abandon them when things get tough. The image of being "washed up like a riptide" emphasizes the sudden and overwhelming nature of his demise.
"Beside the fact, my voice is wack / Clowns is runnin' 'round, talkin' 'bout I smoke crack"
Fatlip replies to claims and comments about his personal life and career. He feels alienated and disconnected from his identity and community.
"Who am I kiddin', who am I foolin' / When they be like 'What's up Fatlip?,' and I say 'Coolin'"
The chorus portrays the underlying tension between his public persona and his inner issues. When people ask about him, he seems to be fine, although he is far from "cool."
"I go out like a sucka almost every day / In the back of your mind, you're probably thinkin' I was gay"
In the second verse, Fatlip explores his concerns and perceived flaws. He recalls how people judged and misread him, revealing his flaws and self-doubt.
"I'm far from hard, emotionally scarred / On Pico Boulevard, I was regarded as a retard"
He admits being emotionally hurt and mocked, presenting himself as an underdog who has surmounted numerous personal challenges.
"Has-been MC on a label that's unstable / Choppin' bliggy on the table"
Fatlip acknowledges his difficulties in the music industry, as well as his efforts to overcome them. He openly exposes the instability in both his career and personal lives. The cheerful tone of the outro contrasts with the serious worries expressed in the verses. It denotes a fleeting feeling of confidence or a recall of previous abilities.
