Artist Info:

War is an American funk ensemble put together in 1969. They are eclectic in their style, combining funk, jazz, rock, and Latin music. The group was fronted by Eric Burdon from The Animals, but their fame came like an avalanche with their 1970s hits like "Low Rider" and "Spill the Wine". Quite often, their music touches on the treatment of social issues and causes of peace and unity. Indeed, over the years War has been changing, but not their message of harmony and togetherness. They were an important group in the development of West Coast funk and soul.

Annotations and Meaning:

The song Why Can't We Be Friends? by War is an invocation for unity and peace. Its repetitive chorus emphasizes simplicity and urgency. The text of the song is about the stupidity of divisions among people.

"I've seen you 'round for a long long time / I remembered you when you drank my wine"

It means that a connection has existed in the past—familiarity and shared experience. But still, distance is in existence.

"I've seen you walking down in Chinatown / I called you but you could not look around"

The lyrics discuss a missed connection and the barriers that lie between true interaction. The mention of Chinatown also implies cultural diversity and the prospect of intercommunal understanding.

"I paid my money to the welfare line / I see you standing in it every time"

This sentence emphasizes shared problems and common ground, reinforcing the concept that everyone is suffering through difficult times, regardless of where they are from.

"The color of your skin don't matter to me / As long as we can live in harmony"

This line is powerful because it rejects racism while also consolidating the song's fundamental concept of harmony and equality.

"I'd kind of like to be the President / So I can show you how your money's spent"

The lyric emphasizes a political point by stating that leadership should prioritize transparency and unifying people rather than dividing them.

"Sometimes I don't speak right / But yet I know what I'm talking about"

This understands communication constraints, but the desire for friendship and peace overcomes them.

"I know you're working for the CIA / They wouldn't have you in the Mafi-A."

It's a pretty fun line that injects a humorous point at the end of the piece, which holds up a satirical cue to a serious message of friendship and acceptance. It is an invitation from the singer for the audience to realize that beyond surface disparities, there is an overwhelming need for convergence into common understanding and harmonious coexistence. The often repeated question, "Why can't we be friends?" underscores the superfluous barriers that are usually highlighted between us.
