Annotations and Meaning:

Josias Damasceno's "Bassânio" is a literally animated character outline put to music, summarizing all of the aspects of the very essence its titulary character is composed of—yet one can say that it helps comprise the soundtrack for the animated film "A Infância de Romeu e Julieta." In this song, he is characterized as a loved person by everyone, very diligent, and representing that the mission of his life could be framed by simple but profound desires. The constant refrain, "Bassanio, Bassanio, Se dá bem com todo mundo," brings out the fact of how universal and easygoing he is socially. The expression "Eita sangue Bom" means "Oh, good blood," referring that Bassanio is from naturally good nature; 'bom sangue' in Portuguese, besides meaning good health, equates to character. This touches on the cultural aspect of the appreciation of those who have natural charisma and have many friends in society. The verses outline Bassânio's background and aspirations. Starting with the mere entry of his parents, "Dona Quitere and Sr. Severino," moving to the city to realize all their dreams and aspirations, encapsulating a story of hope and determination. It has relatable and universal goals: owning a home, starting a family that would underline the need for traditional values in life, which resonates with many of the listeners. To say that Bassanio is "wood for all works"—literally, "pau pra toda obra"—it follows that the character is of a versatile nature and ever ready to work. He has a light character; therefore, the words, "his frolicsome good humor at all times," contributed to that character trait. His salesman flair further adds to the allure of his personality, humorously saying that he was so convincing he could "sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo." The hyperbole really does not augur that he can sell refrigerators to Eskimos but only gives a touch of humor in the story and emphasizes how great a communicator and powerful his charisma was. The song also vaguely insinuates his innocence and sensitive nature, pointing to Bassanio as one who doesn't spread wings of networking, but one with a deep emotional core, as suggested by the simile "Coração mole feito pudim"—a heart soft like pudding.

Themes and Messages:

"Bassânio" celebrates the ideals of a hardworking community and the spirit of optimism. It's all about the essence of being optimistic and at the same time showing that it is very possible to wear a smile on the face at all times en route to making your dreams come true. Personal qualities of the character quite admirable included his modesty and an ability to stay positive in all conditions. This jovially light and comic number still actually delivers a message of hope for holding on to your values and a sense of humor throughout all the trials and tribulations that life throws at you.
